Who We Are:
Save the Chimps (STC) operates one of the largest chimpanzee sanctuaries in the world. Located on 150 acres on the beautiful Treasure Coast of Florida, the Sanctuary provides high quality clinical and lifetime care and enrichment for over 200 chimpanzees rescued from research laboratories, the U.S. Air Force, the entertainment industry, and the pet trade. The work of the organization is accomplished by a team of over 80 full-time dedicated employees, an impassioned community of volunteers, and a committed, accomplished board of directors.

Make a real difference by joining an experienced team consisting of the Director of Veterinary Services, 2 Associate Veterinarians, 2 Senior Veterinary Technicians and 2 Pharmacy Technicians/Field Medical Trainers who work collaboratively with chimp behavior and care staff to ensure the rescued chimpanzees in our care can enjoy the best lives possible in their forever home.
Clinical Procedures
- Phlebotomy, IV catheter placement.
- IV fluid and drug administration and monitoring.
- Induction, intubation, maintenance and monitoring of anesthesia including a detailed written anesthesia log.
- Surgical prep, monitoring, recovery and post-op patient care.
- Laboratory analysis of urine, feces, blood, and other samples; record keeping of results.
- Preparation of biological samples for shipment to outside laboratories.
- Perform ultrasound-guided cystocentesis.
- Perform 12-channel ECG.
- Perform digital radiography, including dental.
- Set up, clean up and assist with post-mortem examinations; document examinations with photographs and written records.
- Serve as an adjunct member of the STAT team, under direction of the veterinarian(s).
- Train chimps for medical procedures using operant conditioning.
Hospital Duties
- Prepare and distribute medications
- Label prescription vials and keep the prescription information current and updated
- Maintain thorough records of temporary medications and medication remakes
- Maintain, clean and stock veterinary and mobile hospitals, the lab and pharmacy
- Data entry and filing of laboratory records
- Respond to triage calls alongside the veterinarians/other veterinary technicians and independently if others are unavailable
- Ensure all medications are in-date, not expired
- Prepare biological samples for shipment to outside laboratories
- Assist with chimpanzee examination procedure tasks as directed
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you need to be successful in this role:
- Associate or Bachelor degree in Veterinary Technology or commensurate experience required.
- Knowledge of over-the-counter medications and common prescriptions.
- Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Demonstrated success working in a collaborative and team based environment.
- Excellent communication skills and demonstrated flexibility in an ever-changing environment.
- Proficient with the use of Google software to include creation and modifications of documents, spreadsheets, email and calendar functionality.
- Proficient in the use of medical record software.
- Experience with or interest in great apes
